Central African Republic > Snapshot
The Central African Republic is a predominantly agricultural country of 4.4. people with a small but lucrative diamond mining sector. Diamonds are estimated to contribute to over 50% of the export revenue, but it is thought that nearly one third of the diamonds that leave the country are sold on the black market (and therefore are not counted in the export revenue). Agriculture (cotton, cassava, peanuts, grains, sesame and plaintains) is the principal livelihood of most people in the CAR.
While tourism has not yet become a major income earner for CAR, the country has expansive natural wildlife and parks (Bamingui-Bangoran National Park, Manovo-Gounda St Floris National Park, Dzanga-Sangha National Park) which, with the proper protection under the government and with the help of investors in the tourism industry, has the potential to become a significant contributor to GDP. However, currently, wildlife (elephants, rhinos and leopards) in the CAR is under threat from poachers who seek to sell the animals’ ivory and hides on the black market.
