Belize > Snapshot

Belize, the only English-speaking country in Central America, Belize, a country of just over 300,000 people, has emerged from its post-colonial roots as a mahogany exporting country to become in the twentieth first century an eco-tourism gem. Belize’s economy is heavily tied to the United States, with the Belizean Dollar pegged 2:1 to the US Dollar.

The population of Belize is heterogeneous and integrated, with most Belizeans able to cite their roots as a mix of Asian (China, Taiwan or India), Black (freed slaves), Indigenous (Mayan) and European (British, Irish or Spanish colonizers or merchants). While the country is politically and economically stable, the education system has been underinvested in and petty crime as well as gang crime within Belize City is on the rise.
